This book has been designed to assist the classroom teacher with activities and teaching strategies appropriate for teaching the elements of reading identified by the National Reading Panel. The book is divided into five sections appropriately named after each of the elements of reading instruction.

Within each section, you will find a definition of the element of reading, as well as a variety of ways to implement this key for effective reading instruction in your classroom. Some of the activities are teacher-directed activities, while others are games which students can use for practice, A variety of student activity sheets are provided as well. When appropriate, these activity sheets can be copied and distributed for the student to complete.

The activities included in this book are not meant to be a complete reading program. They are to be used in conjunction with your school's adopted reading program. These activities are meant to provide you with ideas for ways to make teaching the elements of reading more fun.
