The following standards or objectives will be met or reinforced by completing the practice pages included in this book. These standards and objectives are similar to the ones required by your state and school district and are appropriate for first graders.

  • The student correctly uses and capitalizes the pronoun "I".
  • The student identifies and correctly capitalizes the first word in a sentence.
  • The student identifies and correctly capitalizes simple proper nouns (e.g., names of people, days of the week, months of the year).
  • The student identifies different types of sentences (i.e., declarative (telling), interrogative (question), and exclamatory (with emotion).
  • The student uses correct punctuation at the end of sentences (i.e., period, question mark, exclamation point).
  • The student uses a comma to separate words in a series.
  • The student uses a comma to separate adjectives (describing words) describing the same noun.
