Prepare students for the new science assessment tests. Helps
build many essential science and reading skills.
This engaging teacher resource book is organized into 20
six-page lessons. The book covers four content areas: earth, life, health,
and physical science. Each of the four content areas has five lessons.
Each lesson includes a two-page article adapted from Weekly Reader
magazine or from Science Spin magazine. Each article is accompanied
by a two-page reading comprehension and vocabulary activity and by a two-page
hands-on science activity that gives students practice to reinforce concepts
contained in the articles.
More and more educators are demanding materials to ensure
that students are prepared for the new science assessments. Science
Skill Builders reflects the type of reading passages that students
will see on standardized science tests. It also helps students develop
competency in science content and skills with practical, hands-on application
of scientific principles through classroom experiments and observation.
The 20 six-page lessons in each book:
- Cover the full range of topics in earth, life, physical, and health
sciences
- Help students develop content-area reading comprehension skills
- Include classroom experiments and observation activities that provide
hands-on application of scientific principles
- Include science vocabulary and concepts students need to know

at all.
The activities are meant to support and be a resource for
teachers as they teach these content skills. The activities provide review
and practice in the following areas of science:
- five senses and how they help us learn
- living and nonliving things
- plant parts and their functions
- different environments or habitats of plants and animals
- different characteristics of animals
- life cycle of a plant, frog, or butterfly
- basic functions of the different parts of the human body
- water cycle
- the sequence of seasons and what activities happen in each season
- how fossils are made and how scientists collect fossils
- different kinds of dinosaurs and what facts scientists have learned
about them
- natural resources that are used by people
- solids, liquids, and gases
- magnets
- sink and float
Each activity is set up with an easy-to-follow lesson. First, each lesson
states the objective or learning skill and the materials needed. Most
of the materials are provided inside this book. Next, the lesson outlines
in what kinds of groupings the activity can be implemented. Most of the
activities can be adapted in multiple ways and can be "custom tailored".
They can be implemented as a whole class lesson, small group, partners,
independently, or in a science center. The activities can also be adapted
for a variety of student levels.
Suggestions are listed in the actual directions of the activity or they
are suggested in the "Ideas" section. The "Ideas"
section contains many helpful hints on such things as storage of materials
or ideas to either enhance or extend the activity. Overall, the book is
an asset to any first or second grade teacher.

Each experience has been designed to be quick and easy. With
only minor or no preparation required, children are introduced
to science experiences which are amazing, exciting, and intellectually
stimulating.
Experiment with air pressure, homemade chemicals, gravity, and
water to discover principles of physical science.
Investigate Earth by learning how a volcano erupts, how rocks
become smooth, and what is in the air we breathe.
Examine the basis of life, why plants grow toward the sun, and
how fish swim underwater.
Simple Science Fun begins to teach children the value
