Includes practice for Standardized Tests!

Both teachers and parents appreciate how effectively this resource book helps students master skills in writing. It provides activities that are great for independent work in class, homework assignments, or extra practice to get ahead.

This is a resource to help students practice and reinforce skills taught in the classroom. This book presents paragraph skills that are appropriate for second graders.

It is divided into 7 main sections. Each of those sections is based on one of the following objectives that second grade students should meet:

  • Plan a paragraph (discuss ideas, list ideas) before beginning to write.
  • Use a logical organization.
  • Revise a paragraph by varying sentence structure and by adding specific details and eliminating irrelevant ones.
  • Proof a paragraph to check for correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
  • Edit a paragraph to improve organization, sentence structure, and word choice.

A review section at the beginning of the book covers some of the basics of writing: kinds of sentences; the correct use of punctuation, grammar, and capitalization; and spelling.

Following the review, there are exercises that provide practice in paragraph planning and organizing, revising, proofing, and editing. Attention is also given to individual sentence structure and content within paragraphs as well as the mechanics of writing: grammar, punctuation capitalization, and spelling.

At the end of each section, there are assessments to evaluate a student's progress in each of the skills practiced (planning, organizing, revising, proofing, and editing).

At the end of the book, a final assessment covers all five skills. It is in standardized test format to help students practice test-taking as well as paragraph writing skills. In addition, there is an assessment that requires the student to write an original paragraph.

We have included a special bonus section: Marko shows you how to proofread your work, and he reveals secrets to score well on multiple-choice writing tests. Plus, you will find free downloadable posters and support material at Marko’s special website.

All of the students using this program during our research loved watching it and commented that many of the writing concepts that they had heard about in school finally made sense to them. Spectacular animation and Marko’s humor keep students focused. We suggest that the main program be viewed at a separate session from the bonus material. The main Writing Program is 34 minutes in length. Students may review certain tools at any time, easily accessible from the DVD menu.

Proofing and Editing, Marko’s bonus material is 37 minutes in length and helps students catch careless errors in their work. Students learn to proof for errors involving paragraphs, quotes, incomplete sentences, subject-verb agreement, misspelled words, punctuation, and much more.
